The current armed conflict between Palestinians and Israel is a complex and long-standing struggle over land, identity, and security. It has its roots in the late nineteenth century, when the Zionist movement emerged as a response to the persecution of Jews in Europe and sought to establish a Jewish homeland in Palestine, then under Ottoman rule. The conflict intensified after World War I, when Britain took control of Palestine and issued the Balfour Declaration, promising
